The Overbrook Environmental Education and Economic Development Program (OEEEDP) was designed to remove barriers from student’s access to technological and environmental resources in their community. Also, the OEEEDP will identify
relationships between the environment and the economy, and to encourage participation in sustainable technologies and environmental projects.
The OEEEDP is developed by JASTECH Development Services, Inc. JASTECH is a 501 (c) (3), not-for-profit public organization and operates its programming through the Overbrook Environmental Education Center (OEEC). The function of the OEEC is to
serve as an environmental exploration and demonstration site that will exhibit conservation methods and provide a community based Technology and Literacy training.
The mission of this center is to promote public health education, and participation in sustainable technological and environmental projects. Through the use of field exploration, class room training and public education materials the OEEC intends to identify interesting and exciting ways to develop environmentally-friendly behaviors that reduces pollution and contamination of our waterways, land and air.
One of the key objectives of the OEEC is to promote a systematic relationship between the economy, community and environment. Exploring the interaction amongst these entities will help to illustrate the cost and impact on our communities due to poor environmental practices.
The OEEC and its community partners will implement good citizenship and housekeeping practices for a clean and healthy community. Improved public and corporate behavior modification is also encouraged to reduce pollutants actually
deposited on our streets, in our water, and in the air.Currently, The Philadelphia School Board of Philadelphia has adopted a resolution calling for the establishment of model training - assisted community schools. These training - assisted schools will provide competencies and technology currently outside of the scope of the school district’s existing services. The OEEC enjoys the benefit of student participation from Philadelphia area public and private schools. These participants are part of our urban/suburban partnership and jointly perform in regional environmental educational programming.
The curriculum in the following pages is designed for a fourteen-week instructor-lead programming session. Each highlighted subject heading provides both backgrounds on the topic, learning outcomes and criteria for student participation. The overall intent of this curriculum is to stimulate awareness of our environment, create an active setting where students “can learn by doing” and by all means, develop new skills while having fun!
